概要

The SketchUp Design Sprint Challenge 2025: Design 500 sq ft for 2050 that creates a positive social impact. The SketchUp community was asked to show how limited urban space can be transformed into sustainable, community-focused architecture, addressing future needs with creative, practical solutions.

The 2025 Design Sprint Challenge marked a significant milestone in SketchUp history, celebrating the software's 25th anniversary. In true SketchUp spirit, the Design Sprint Challenge invited our creative community to create their own imaginative designs for the future. Participants were invited to envision the year 2050 and design spaces (interior/exterior or landscape) that have a positive social impact to address the environmental, community, or accessibility needs of the future.

Designing the future: 500 square feet of impact

Limited urban space will be a defining challenge for years to come. Participants were asked to innovate within just 500 square feet, demonstrating how this compact area can deliver a profound impact. Entries were directed to illustrate how a 500-square-foot design in 2050 could revolutionize our understanding of sustainable or community-focused architecture. The major challenge — they were only given 60 minutes to create their design.

The winning design: living better, together

Raphaël Craverio, an architecture student at LISAA Paris, won the first-place prize with his creative, community-focused design. His design addresses a fundamental question: What if our future cities could help people live better together? Inspired by the provided architectural shell model, "Exterior," this innovative design transforms the urban experience by fostering seamless interaction between those inside and outside the building.

The ground floor is open, creating wider, more accessible sidewalks – a crucial feature for universal accessibility and the increasingly crowded cities of 2050. The project cleverly repositions original architectural columns to enhance pedestrian flow, while integrating dedicated bicycle paths that reflect cycling's growing importance in urban transit.

Nature is central to the design. Strategically placed trees and plants provide essential summer shade and allow warming sunlight through in winter when their leaves fall. Benches nestled beneath the trees invite residents to pause, rest, and connect with nature.

Above, a shared rooftop garden empowers residents to grow their own food, promoting sustainable and responsible living. The building's distinctive wooden roof panels pivot to optimize sunlight, adapting to daily and seasonal changes. Subtle color-coded ground markings delineate pedestrian and cycling zones, ensuring harmony with the natural elements.

This inclusive design offers a thoughtful and intelligent blueprint for the city of tomorrow—greener, more peaceful, and intimately connected to its people's everyday needs. It truly represents an open, green, and human-centric vision for future urban environments.
