Summary

We interviewed designer Taryn Echeverry of The Curator LA, who believes elevation in the creative process comes through collaboration. Taryn's journey as an interior designer is a compelling story of turning visions into reality. Let’s dive into her process.

The power of a soundboard

Creatives everywhere know that the best work emerges when people work together. Taryn believes having a soundboard—a person to bounce ideas off—is the foundation of her design success. This speaks to the heart of her creative process, which is fundamentally collaborative. As one half of The Curator LA, a studio based in LA, Taryn emphasizes that every project is heavily collaborative. This perspective ensures the client's needs and desires are at the forefront of the design.

Discovery and exploration: from client goals to moodboards

Taryn's typical creative process begins with deep discovery. Starting with the client's goals, wants, and the negatives of their space. Once these big ideas are decided upon, the true exploration begins. Her team dives into the physical elements of design, engaging in extensive mood boarding and sourcing of materials. It's an intensive period of research and refinement, where they get into the thick of translating abstract ideas into tangible design concepts. Taryn's work is about taking all those textures and finishes the client loves and showing them the complete project before it's realized in the real world.

Iterate and execute: SketchUp's role in precision

The transition from concept to final design is where Taryn's use of tools becomes critical. Working on a multitude of projects with varying client demands, she provides highly customised designs to meet each unique client's needs. SketchUp allows Taryn to build custom furniture with ease, allowing her to make sure it works in the space, iterating every last detail to perfection before physically cutting any wood.

Taryn shares, "In design, your first idea is rarely your best idea".

This idea is central to her work. While large-scale design shifts might happen a few times, the smaller-scale refinements happen continuously. It's an ongoing, meticulous process of tweaking and adjusting until the design perfectly suits the space and the client.

SketchUp provides the precision and flexibility needed to iterate quickly. A self-taught SketchUp learner herself, Taryn believes SketchUp gets your project started with ease. This speaks to the platform's accessibility, allowing designers to quickly move through revisions and ensure every detail is accounted for before fabrication begins.

Accessibility → Possibility: revolutionizing the way you create

Ultimately, Taryn's story shows that accessible and flexible tools are the key to unlocking boundless possibilities. The intuitiveness of SketchUp ensures that her collaborative process is seamless and that her vision is accurately translated from digital model to finished space. Her approach—built on open communication, detailed exploration, and precise execution—is a powerful reminder of how collaboration truly elevates the creative process.
