Summary

Use conversation to build SketchUp models. The new SketchUp Connector for Claude turns prompts, sketches and images into 3D geometry, expanding access to professional design.

Learning how to use 3D modeling tools can feel like a barrier to getting your work done. At Trimble, we are committed to removing these hurdles with intuitive, easy-to-use software. Architects and designers will find their creative flow even easier with the new SketchUp Connector for Claude—an AI-driven integration that generates 3D models through natural conversation and plain language.

Conversational 3D workflows

By simply describing your vision, you can build furniture, site plans, architectural massing and even sculptures. The SketchUp Connector allows you to generate models using basic shapes and curved surfaces. The Connector produces native .skp files from your prompts. You can provide Claude with:

  • Descriptions: Direct text prompts of what you intend to build.

  • References: Uploaded sketches, photographs or floor plans.

  • Dimensions: Providing specific dimensions gives Claude less room to guess.

  • Partial Ideas: Tell Claude what you’re thinking and work through the problem together before starting a model.

Working in a cloud-based SketchUp environment, Claude builds and verifies geometry step-by-step according to your instructions. Because Claude models geometry, using prompts emphasizing form and proportion will yield better results.

Fast, fluid iteration

Design is a process of continuous refinement. Removing complexity turns your ideas into innovations with less friction. Claude supports this organic workflow through:

  • Version history: During each session, track every adjustment within the chat to troubleshoot or revert your design at any time.

  • Intuitive refinements: Just describe the adjustment or paste SketchUp screenshots into the dialogue to highlight specific elements or angles that require changes.

Immediate file access

Once you’re satisfied with your model, the Connector delivers a 2D thumbnail preview alongside a direct download link for the .skp file. These models are fully compatible with the entire SketchUp ecosystem, including SketchUp for Desktop, Web and iPad.

For each session, Claude keeps every variation of your model along with a text summary of changes made in each iteration. All models are available for download during the session, and Claude saves chat messages to refer back to but does not store models between sessions.

Develop custom AI design skills

Another powerful advantage is the ability to train Claude on core skills and specific design workflows. You can teach the AI to consistently duplicate your most repetitive tasks, effectively building a personalized design assistant tailored to your needs.

“By allowing users to get started with natural language and leveraging the power of Claude, anyone, including non-traditional 3D users, can quickly and easily create a 3D design,” says VP & GM of architecture, design and education at Trimble, Chris Cronin. “We are expanding the community of creators: 3D for everyone.”

Start your project

Eager to visualize your ideas through AI chat? The Claude Connector is now available for SketchUp subscribers. You will need a Claude account to access the Connector in the director and a Trimble ID for authentication. Enable the service via the Trimble SketchUp option in Claude’s MCP directory connector settings. New users receive a free SketchUp entitlement to save up to 30 models; a paid entitlement is required to save more.
